During the French Revolution, it was known as the Rue de Franciade<\/a><\/strong>. The street was one of the centres of the June Rebellion of 1832, immortalised in Victor Hugo’s novel Les Mis\u00e9rables<\/em>, and which is referred to in the book as the “Epic of the Rue Saint-Denis<\/em>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From ancient road to triumphal arch.<\/strong> Rue Saint\u2011Denis<\/a> is among Paris\u2019s oldest streets, laid out in the Roman era and used for royal entries toward the Abbey of Saint\u2011Denis. In the 17th century, the neighbourhood gained its landmark: Porte Saint\u2011Denis<\/a> (1672), a triumphal arch at the city\u2019s threshold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe belly of Paris,\u201d then a new heart.<\/strong> Nearby, Les Halles<\/a> fed the city for centuries. After the late\u20111960s move to Rungis, Montorgueil<\/a> kept the food spirit while the 2nd blends shops, covered passages, old workshops\u2026 and a distinctly Parisian nightlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
